Residency vs citizenship

Permanent residency or Brazilian citizenship?

Indefinite residence lets you live in Brazil with no end date. Naturalization makes you Brazilian, and you can apply for it only after a period of indefinite residence.

In short

Indefinite residence suits anyone who wants to live in Brazil with no end date; naturalization suits people who already have it and want to become Brazilian. You can apply for naturalization after 4 years of indefinite residence, or 1 or 2 years in some cases, with proof of Portuguese unless you're from a Portuguese-speaking country.

Common questions

Do I need indefinite residence before I can naturalize?

Yes. The waiting period is counted in residence with no end date: usually 4 years, cut to 1 or 2 years in some cases, such as having a Brazilian child or spouse, or coming from a Portuguese-speaking country.

Do I need to speak Portuguese?

For naturalization, yes, unless you're from a Portuguese-speaking country. It's usually shown with the Celpe-Bras exam or an approved Portuguese course for immigrants, and checked again at the Federal Police appointment.

Can I lose indefinite residence?

Yes. Spending more than 2 years outside Brazil without a justification can mean losing it. Your CRNM card also has its own expiry: 9 years for indefinite residents, with no expiry from age 60 or with a disability.
